What used to be a fist fight is now a gun fight. Today’s shooting is the result of too many guns on the street and too much bravado and bluster. These victims of violence were senselessly shot in Bladensburg after attending a funeral. Five wounded with 3 in critical condition is simply unacceptable. My heart hurts for these families experiencing this painful incident today.

I was saddened to hear that we lost a trailblazer in Prince George’s County politics. Just last month, I attended a tribute in honor of the one and only Tommie Broadwater. His unique and personal touch in retail politics can only be described as down-to-earth. He knew your name. He knew your church. He knew about your struggling nephew or your sick aunt. From the halls of power as a State Senator in Annapolis to the halls of the courthouse in Upper Marlboro and Hyattsville, Tommie was a formidable player in Maryland's political and legal landscape.

As Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote, “Our country has never been colorblind [g]iven the lengthy history of state-sanctioned race-based preferences in America.” And yet, the Supreme Court today turned a blind eye to this history, striking down the consideration of race in college admissions as if generations of slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow did not exist or efforts to ameliorate these entrenched disadvantages in higher education no longer serve the cause of justice.
