Healthcare

Making health care affordable is one of my top priorities in Congress. We need to safeguard health care coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and deepen and expand access to quality health care for everyone. No one should ever have to worry about affording a lifesaving treatment or going bankrupt because they or someone they love falls seriously ill. Health care is a right not a privilege, and I will not stop fighting until Americans have universal access to it.
The Republican budget and H.R. 1, the One Big Ugly Bill, pose severe cuts to health care coverage. Prince George’s County represents over 17.1% of Medicaid recipients in Maryland. Due to increased red tape and “work requirements,” the Maryland Department of Health estimates that nearly 30,000 Prince George’s County residents will lose Medicaid coverage during the second Trump term. I will not stand by as President Trump sacrifices my constituents’ health care in exchange for tax cuts for his billionaire friends.
We should protect and build on the gains we have made under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) not peel them back. That work includes extending – and expanding – the ACA Premium Tax Credits that are set to expire at the end of 2025 so that families do not have their health care ripped away. I refuse to go back to the days when insurance companies could impose limits on your coverage, kick young adults off their parents’ plans, deny coverage to people for pre-existing conditions, or even charge women more for their health care.
Relevant Legislation
I am proud to have either sponsored or co-sponsored the following legislation, and I will work tirelessly towards passing this legislation in the 119th Congress.
H.R. 247, the Health Care Affordability Act, extends and expands the Affordable Care Act Premium Tax Credits to provide greater tax returns to families and communities that need health care the most;
H.R. 3069, the Medicare for All Act, provides every American the health care coverage they need because it is a human right.
H.R. 12, the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2025, protects the right to abortion and health care providers’ ability to provide abortion services.
H.R.764, the Global Health, Empowerment and Rights Act, safeguards access to sexual and reproductive health care services and information across the globe.
H.R. 842, the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act, covers early detection cancer screenings for Medicaid recipients, so that people can catch cancer early and can make informed decisions about their health care.
H.R. 2351, the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, ensures employers within the health care and social service industries develop and implement workplace violence prevention plans.
Community Engagement and Public Education
In and around Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District, I have been on the ground discussing these issues with constituents and leaders in the health care space. This includes:
- Attending an April Town Hall with the American Kidney Foundation, where we discussed disparities in kidney health, how we can empower young people to focus on their kidney health, and my experience with kidney cancer.
- Hosting a Medicaid Roundtable in March with community leaders in the health care to discuss the potential effects of the Trump Administration’s and House Republicans proposed cuts to Medicaid.
- Protesting the Trump Administration’s freezing of funds at the Department of Health and Human Services in February with members of the Higher Education Labor United coalition including employees from the National Institutes of Health, University of Maryland, and Johns Hopkins.
As your Congressman, I will continue to fight to make the lives of my constituents better by expanding their ability to easily see a doctor and get the care they need.
