Congressman Glenn Ivey (D) is a co-sponsor of Michigan Democrat Debbie Dingell’s legislation to remove PFAS, a harmful fluorinated chemical often known as “forever” chemicals, from firefighter gear. These chemicals are persistent, accumulate in the bloodstream, and are toxic. They are linked to harmful human health effects, including reproductive and developmental harms, weakened immune systems, and cancer: the leading cause of firefighter death.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman John Sarbanes (both D-Md.) introduced their bipartisan, bicameral legislation to create a unified Chesapeake National Recreation Area (CNRA). The bill proposes to unite a series of voluntarily contributed park areas and iconic Bay properties under the operation of the National Park Service (NPS) in order to provide more federal resources for environmental conservation, celebrate the Chesapeake’s diverse cultural and economic history, foster sustainable and equitable access to the Bay, and spur economic growth in the watershed region.

Congressman Glenn Ivey, D-Md., who represents much of Prince George’s County, Maryland, is part of a group of bipartisan lawmakers pushing for new legislation that would fund the development of turnout gear for firefighters free of PFAS, which are also known as “forever chemicals.”

“They’re already putting their lives at risk to fight fires. We don’t want to put them at risk just from the gear that’s supposed to be saving their lives,” Ivey said at a news conference last week at PGFD Fire Station 802 in Capitol Heights.

What used to be a fist fight is now a gun fight. Today’s shooting is the result of too many guns on the street and too much bravado and bluster. These victims of violence were senselessly shot in Bladensburg after attending a funeral. Five wounded with 3 in critical condition is simply unacceptable. My heart hurts for these families experiencing this painful incident today.

I was saddened to hear that we lost a trailblazer in Prince George’s County politics. Just last month, I attended a tribute in honor of the one and only Tommie Broadwater. His unique and personal touch in retail politics can only be described as down-to-earth. He knew your name. He knew your church. He knew about your struggling nephew or your sick aunt. From the halls of power as a State Senator in Annapolis to the halls of the courthouse in Upper Marlboro and Hyattsville, Tommie was a formidable player in Maryland's political and legal landscape.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), ranking member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD), ranking member of the Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Subcommittee, sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General Joseph Cuffari calling on him to immediately resign after he admitted during Congressional testimony to a “normal practice” of deleting “business” text messages from his government-issued phone  – willful and intentional acts that may constitute criminal violations of the Federal Records Act (FRA) and DHS policy.
