Congressman Glenn Ivey's statement on the passing of fellow Congressman Donald Payne Jr.

“Today, we have heavy hearts as one of our esteemed colleagues, Congressman Donald Payne Jr. has passed after being in a coma. His departure leaves us deeply saddened, for he was not just a congressman but also a cherished friend and dedicated advocate.
Donald Payne Jr. was a beacon of hope and inspiration, especially for those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him. His commitment to improving the lives of his constituents was evident in every decision he made and every cause he championed. His struggles with Type 1 Diabetes informed many of these battles he fought, from the Affordable Care Act to lowering insulin prices for the elderly.
As a colleague, and co-member in the Committee on Homeland Security, Donald was approachable, compassionate, and always willing to lend a helping hand. He always brought people together, bridging divides and fostering collaboration for the greater good, whether it was in the Black Caucus or in regional or national leadership groups.
Donald's impact extended far beyond the walls of Congress. His passion for social justice, healthcare reform, and educational equity fed his work and left a lasting impact on our community. He identified with the struggles of everyday Americans and dedicated his life to fighting for their rights and dignity.
In the midst of our grief, let us also celebrate Donald's legacy—a legacy of service, integrity, and compassion. He leaves behind a body of work for us all to follow.
To Donald's family, wife Beatrice, his children Donald III, Jack and Yvonne and the entire Payne family, I extend my deepest condolences. Know that his memory will forever be cherished among his colleagues and friends.
As we mourn his passing, let us honor Donald Payne Jr.'s life by continuing the work he was so passionate about. May we carry forward his spirit of empathy and dedication, striving to build a better world for generations to come.
Congressman Payne, rest in peace. Your presence will be profoundly missed, and your legacy will endure."
