Congressman Glenn Ivey Honors the Legacy of Congressman Gerry Connolly

May 21, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Glenn Ivey (D-MD) today issued the following statement in remembrance of his esteemed colleague, Congressman Gerry Connolly, who passed away on May 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and colleague, Congressman Gerry Connolly. For more than three decades, Gerry was a tireless advocate for the federal workforce and a steadfast defender of our democracy. His leadership on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, as the Ranking Member, was pivotal in promoting transparency, integrity, and accountability across the executive branch.

“Congressman Connolly’s commitment to federal employees was unwavering. As a senior member of the Oversight Committee and the Subcommittee on Government Operations, he was a passionate and effective voice for active and retired federal workers. At a time when federal employees faced growing threats to their pay, benefits, and job security, Gerry stood firm. He championed landmark legislation like the Telework Enhancement Act and the Postal Service Reform Act, recognizing that a strong, modern government begins with supporting the people who serve it.

“His impact extended beyond domestic policy. Congressman Connolly brought deep foreign policy expertise to Congress and served twice as President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, where he worked to strengthen global alliances and advance international stability.

“Even while facing his own health challenges, Gerry never stopped fighting for others. He remained a leading voice on immigration reform, pushing for pragmatic, compassionate policies that balanced border security with the protection of immigrant and refugee rights.

“His legacy is one of integrity, intellect, and public service. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, staff, and all who are grieving this tremendous loss. Congressman Connolly's life and leadership will continue to inspire all of us who are privileged to serve.”
