'There's likely to be a ripple effect'; Md. Congressman weighs in on Key Bridge collapse
7News is hearing from a Maryland lawmaker about what people living in parts of the DMV can expect in the coming weeks as the fallout continues.
Congressman Glenn Ivey (D-Md), who represents Prince George's County, says prices across the board could likely go up as the supply chain is hit hard from the Port of Baltimore's closure.
"It’s going to cost more to ship things to this region. Potentially, people need to be prepared for some increases in some of the things they’re paying," said Ivey.
Ivey says only time will tell what goods in particular could see price hikes, but to be prepared for that possibility.
Ivey also vows that the Maryland Delegation is going to work together to secure the resources to get the bridge back up.
"I think we’re going to be able to build support on a bipartisan basis to get it done," said Ivey.
Ivey is hopeful lawmakers can reach across the aisle to secure more funding as needed as questions about who may be responsible for the crash and collapse remain.
"There’s potentially litigation. I think the president was right, though, to make sure we don’t wait until a lawsuit plays out. We don’t even know at this point if anybody should be held liable for this accident, for this incident. To the extent restitutions is going to become available to taxpayers for this, we certainly want to make sure that’s pursued," said Ivey.
Besides price hikes, Ivey says traffic congestion for commuters and travelers up and down the entire eastern seaboard will be disrupted.
