Listen: Rep. Glenn Ivey explains why Maryland secured FBI headquarters

November 10, 2023

After more than a decade of political jockeying between Virginia and Maryland over the future headquarters of the FBI, the General Service Administration announced Greenbelt in Prince George’s County secured the bid. The GSA developed a series of criteria to determine the new site location including cost of construction, transportation and access to other law enforcement buildings.

Congressman Glenn Ivey, whose district includes Prince George’s County, said the new headquarters could be a huge economic boost for Maryland residents.

“The building trades will be having an opportunity to supply workers for construction of the building. There are also going to be a lot of employees in Prince George’s County who currently work at the offices downtown that will shorten up their commutes considerably,” he told WAMU.

The move to Maryland has faced criticism from Virginia lawmakers and from FBI Director Christopher Wray, who have raised concerns about the fairness of the selection process.
